If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- If you’re driving, you could take 42nd east, then turn left onto Madison Ave. Go right on 54th for a block, then turn left onto Park Ave. Turn left onto 60th, and we’re halfway up the block on the left, at 30 E 60th St Rm 501.
- If you’re walking, you could walk up 5th Ave for 18 blocks to 60th St, then turn right and walk another block and a half to our building.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Bryant Park’s storied past stretches back over three centuries, making it one of Manhattan’s most historically significant spaces. In 1686, New York’s first Royal Governor Thomas Dongan designated this area as public property, establishing a precedent for public use that continues today. The land witnessed pivotal moments in American history, including General George Washington’s passage through the area in 1776 following the retreat from the Battle of Long Island.
As New York City evolved, so did this central plot of land. After being incorporated into the city grid in 1822, the area served as a potter’s field until 1840, when the massive Croton Reservoir was constructed where the New York Public Library now stands. This four-acre reservoir held 20 million gallons of water and became a popular promenade for notable figures like Edgar Allan Poe, who would walk along its 50-foot walls.
The space truly came alive during the 1853-1854 “Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations,” considered America’s first World’s Fair. The magnificent Crystal Palace, an exact replica of London’s famous structure, housed thousands of exhibitors alongside the 315-foot Latting Observatory, then NYC’s tallest building. Though the exhibition ultimately failed financially and the Crystal Palace burned down in 1858, the area continued to serve the city’s needs, even housing Union troops during the Civil War before finally becoming Reservoir Park in 1870.
