All About Manhattan

Henry Hudson led the first Dutch expedition in 1609. They sailed from Amsterdam and dropped anchor in New York Harbor, where they purchased Manhattan from the Canarsie Indians for $23.70. They had a population of 270 farmers on the tip of Lower Manhattan with forts, homes, and farms.

In 1664, the English captured New Amsterdam and renamed it “New York.” It multiplied, and in 1760 it became the second-largest city in the American colonies.

During the 1760s, the city was alive with anti-British activity. New Yorkers closed their businesses in protest. However, in 1776, the city fell to the British, where it served as a military base until 1783.

By 1810 New York City was one of the nation’s most important ports for the cotton economy. A 363-mile canal was built from the Hudson River to Lake Erie, and New York City became the trading capital of the nation.

As the city grew, an orderly grid of streets and avenues was developed, clean water came for the growing population, and the New York City Police Department began.

Meanwhile, immigrants flooded in from Europe and changed the face of the city. They settled in ethnic neighborhoods, started businesses, and built churches and social clubs.

The late 1800s saw the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge and the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.

During the 1900s, there was rapid growth. In the 20th century, Manhattan went through a significant facelift and the opening of its first subway in 1904. Today, over 8 million people live in the city.

Central Park Near RockCenter Orthodontics

Only a five-minute walk brings you to the South end of 843 acres of sprawling lawns, meadows, and woodlands. It is the best park and one of the most visited in the world.

Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Wealthy merchants and landowners became advocates as they admired London and Paris public grounds. They felt that New York needed open space for an international reputation. They argued that a public park would give families a place for carriage rides and even provide the working class with a healthy alternative to the saloon.

With two ice skating rinks, lakes, open green spaces, sports fields, Central Park Zoo, and no shortage of outdoor concerts and art fairs throughout warmer months, you’ll never run out of things to do here.

So, grab some breakfast and coffee and take a walk through the Rambles and Strawberry Fields. Watch the rowers on the lake, soak in the scenery and enjoy a day basking in nature.
